Attract Mother Nature To Your Garden

April 22, 2019
Ken Burger

A beautiful and complete garden isn’t just attractive to people, it brings in all kinds of different animals from all around the area. The plants you choose to put in your garden will directly affect the kind of animals you attract to your yard. By planting bright and fragrant annuals and perennials, you can bring in beautiful hummingbirds, butterflies, and other helpful pollinators. There are two major factors to take into account when you are looking to attract birds and butterflies to your garden: what plants grow and thrive locally, and what color are the animals you are looking to attract. Birds can see in color and are often attracted to the colors of their own feathers. If you have a specific kind of bird you are looking to bring into your yard, bring in similar colors. If you want to learn more about what plants will attract beautiful wildlife to your yard, come into Burger Farm & Garden Center today.

Annuals to Plant

Annuals are plants that live their entire life cycle in one growing season. These plants grow from seeds all the way through flowering and fruiting in just a few short months, which means that they grow quickly and will produce beautiful flowers as long as they are healthy. A balanced garden will have a good mix of annuals and perennials to keep your garden constantly blooming. Here are two great annuals that will bring color, butterflies, and hummingbirds to your garden:

Zinnias

Zinnias are a beautiful annual that can flower in a variety of colors. From light pink to shades of red and yellow, these little plants provide a huge splash of color to your garden. Hummingbirds prefer bright reds and pinks, whereas butterflies look for a wide variety of colors. Zinnias are better suited for small pollinators like butterflies and bees, so bring in as many colors as you like.

Petunias

Much like zinnias, petunias grow in a wide variety of colors and can even be two-toned depending on the variety. Petunias are a deeper set flower than zinnias and attract butterflies and hummingbirds for pollination. Petunias are the perfect pot filler and will bring a beautiful splash of color to your garden.

Perennials to Plant

Perennials are plants that will come back year after year. You need to be thoughtful when you plant perennials, as they will continue to come back and serve as the basic layout of your garden. These two perennials will have hummingbirds and butterflies coming back day after day:

Coneflowers

Coneflowers thrive throughout central and eastern North America and have large, colorful flowers. Classic coneflowers are normally pink or purple in coloration and offer large areas for pollinators to land. These flowers are sure to come back year after year to help give some color to your garden throughout the spring and summer.

Butterfly Bush

This may go without saying, but butterfly bushes are a favorite feeding ground for butterflies. There are over 140 different species of butterfly bushes that have long cone-like clusters of flowers ranging from purple or blue to pink and orange. If you want your garden to be filled with traveling monarch butterflies or vibrant yellow swallowtails, a butterfly bush is a must have. Hummingbirds are also attracted from far and wide to this large bush’s bright flowers and abundant nectar.

Avoiding Deer

Deer are beautiful animals, but they are also voracious garden eaters. If you live outside of the city, you most likely have some of these four-legged friends around your house looking to snack on your prized tulips. Deer are attracted to abundant gardens, but they can be easily dissuaded by using highly fragrant plants around the borders of your yard. We recommend keeping the deer away with beautiful and fragrant lavender. Deer don’t like eating the fragrant blooms and the purple flowers will attract even more butterflies and hummingbirds.
